Author Lecture: Look to Your Life! by Maggie deVries

She’s written about war. She’s written about bees, bears and butterflies (and fish). She’s written about her sister. And herself. Maggie deVries will talk about her own writing, where it comes from, how she researches her stories, and how to turn to your own lives to find the seeds for stories, whether you’re keen on steampunk, cyberpunk, urban fantasy or contemporary realism.

Maggie de Vries is the author of one book for adults, two books for teens and seven books for children, including Hunger Journeys (Harper Trophy, 2010), Chance and the Butterfly (Orca, 2011), and Tale of a Great White Fish (Greystone, 2007), winner of the Christie Harris Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize. She teaches in UBC’s creative writing department, both on campus and online, and worked for seven years as Orca Book Publishers’ editor of children’s books and teen fantasy. Maggie lives on the banks of the Fraser River with her husband and their two cats.
