A New Home for Oolichan Books

February 9th, 2010

Fernie, B.C. – In the coming months Oolichan Books will be moving from the shores of Georgia Strait to the mountains of the British Columbia Rockies. Oolichan is pleased to announce that Randal Macnair of Fernie has acquired a majority partnership in Oolichan Books from founder and long-time publisher Ron Smith.

Macnair has been working with Smith since July 2009 learning the intricacies of running Oolichan Books. Smith will remain as editor to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure the integrity of Oolichan’s efforts and will remain as the primary editor for Oolichan for the foreseeable future. “I’m delighted that Oolichan Books will survive, and in such capable hands. Randal brings a vision to the press that will see it grow and serve all those who have a passion for reading and for quality writing,” said Smith regarding the move.

Oolichan Books was founded in 1974 in Lantzville, on Vancouver Island, where it serves as the hub of a thriving literary community. Since its inception, Oolichan has published over 250 titles. Our authors have been short-listed or have won over forty national and international awards including the Governor General’s Award, the Commonwealth Prize and several BC Book Prizes.

“It is a privilege to join Oolichan Books, a press I have been familiar with for over 25 years,” stated Macnair. “The values embodied by Oolichan are not just about works of literature but about writers and writing and their role in the future of Canada. To play a part in the continuation of this legacy is an honour.”

Oolichan Books is committed to supporting and cultivating the literary arts in Canada. To this end Oolichan is actively participating in the Fernie Writers Conference and is a sponsor of the national writing promotion Coffee Shop Author (www.coffeeshopauthor.com).

The move to Fernie will serve to continue the quality publishing program Oolichan is known for and will add a mountain flavour to the company. Oolichan’s commitment to Canadian literary works will remain as the foundation of our philosophical approach.
