Job Posting: Editor, Whitecap Books

Whitecap Books is one of Canada’s leading book publishers. Our diverse list focuses primarily on food and wine, but also extends to regional history, regional guidebooks, children’s picture books, and YA.  Whitecap publishes approximately 20 titles per year, separated into Spring and Fall seasons. We are currently seeking one talented, organized, and overall amazing human to fill the position of inhouse Editor.

The Editor will primarily be responsible for performing substantive editing, copy-editing and proofreading in a timely and efficient manner.  Working in conjuction with the Associate Publisher, the editor will help to evaluate manuscripts, determine the nature and scope of each project and offer editorial solutions. They will also monitor and follow up on material that requires permission, ensure manuscripts are free of libelous or plagiarized materials, and perform fact-checking. They will be the primary person responsible for ensuring that books adhere to Whitecap style.

The Editor will work closely with Associate Publisher in communicating editorial changes to authors, and must be able to clearly articulate ideas and be able to troubleshoot conflicts. They will also be responsible for contributing to the writing of cover and catalogue copy, and attending weekly meetings.  Whitecap Books works with a number of qualified freelance editors, and the inhouse editor will be expected to create instructive briefs on any books s/he works on for transmission the freelance editorial team.

Qualifications

Ability to meet multiple deadlines while still maintaining high standards for quality

  • Superior communications skills are a must
  • High level of proficiency in Word, Excel, and digital file management, and familiarity with electronic editing and efficient workflow
  • Previous editorial experience and/or publishing courses/training
  • Knowledge of editorial markup, book production, design principles, and book conventions
  • Knowledge of and passion for food and wine
