Dipnetting with Dad wins the Gold Medal for the Moonbeam Award’s Best First Picture Book

October 13th, 2015

Caitlin PressDipnetting with Dad, by Willie Sellars and illustrated by Kevin Easthope, has won the Gold Medal for the Moonbeam Award’s Best First Picture Book. The Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards are an international award for children’s books published in English or Spanish. The awards are meant to bring increased recognition to exemplary children’s books and their creators, and to celebrate children’s books and life-long reading.

Dipnetting with Dad, a BC Bestseller, continues to reach young readers throughout BC and beyond, was a 2014 Ontario Library Association “Best Bet” and was shortlisted for a Shining Willow Award and a Chocolate Lily Award.

Set in the beautiful landscape of the Cariboo Chilcotin region, it is a delightful and colourful story of a father teaching his son the Secwepemc method of fishing known as dipnetting. Together they visit the Sweat Lodge, mend the nets, select the best fishing spot, and catch and pack their fish through rugged bush back to the family home for traditional preparation.

In his first book, Williams Lake Indian Band member Willie Sellars captures family values, the importance of storytelling, community living and coming of age in one of BC’s oldest cultures. Debut artist Kevin Easthope’s contemporary and dynamic illustrations bring the characters to life as they jump off the page and pull you into their world.
