$5,000 Donated in Memory of Victoria Booksellers Jim Munro and Mel Bolen

January 19th, 2017

A fundraising campaign by members of Vancouver Island’s book community has raised $5,000 for the Times Colonist Christmas Fund. The campaign – a joint effort by Heritage House Publishing and Vancouver Island authors and bookstores – was tied to the pre-Christmas sale of two books: Hard Knox: Musings from the Edge of Canada, by Jack Knox, and The Valiant Nellie McClung: Selected Writings by Canada’s Most Famous Suffragist, by Barbara Smith and Nellie McClung. For each copy sold of the two books, a portion of revenues earned by the author, bookstore, and publisher were directed to the Christmas Fund. The campaign was spearheaded by Heritage House publisher Rodger Touchie with support from Heritage sales rep John Walls, authors Jack Knox and Barbara Smith, and participating bookstores Munro’s Books, Bolen Books, Tanner’s Books, Ivy’s Bookshop, Russell Books, and Ten Old Books.

“Thanks to the enthusiastic efforts of these bookstores,” Touchie said, “we doubled our original goal by selling nearly two thousand units of these books through the Christmas season.”

The final gift of $5,000 was made as a tribute to Mel Bolen and Jim Munro, “two of Victoria’s most cherished booksellers who passed away in the weeks before Christmas,” Touchie said.

The Times Colonist Christmas Fund is a long-time seasonal charity that raises approximately $300,000 annually to provide food and other necessities to needy families in the Greater Victoria area.
